This year's College of Veterinary Medicine Points of Pride Research Day event will be held on Wednesday, October 2, at Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center.

On February 1, the CVM Graduate Programs hosted 17 of our top PhD and MS applicants, including six DVM/PhD combined degree students. Guests visited locations on the Twin Cities campus in St. Paul and Minneapolis, met with current students and faculty, and ended the busy day with dinner and bowling at the St. Paul Student Center. Applicants came from across the country, including California, New York, and Georgia.

Laura Molgaard, DVM, associate dean of Academic and Student Affairs and associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine, was recently honored with the Outstanding Faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine award by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association. She was chosen based on how she exemplifies collaboration, communication, leadership, diversity, lifelong learning, adaptability, and management.

Jaime Modiano, VMD, PhD, a College of Veterinary Medicine and Masonic Cancer Center expert in comparative medicine, recently won a grant by the V Foundation, totaling $600,000 over three years for his study “Novel Immunotherapy for Sarcomas using Combination Oncolytic VSV and IL-18 Superkine." 

This is the fifth V Foundation grant awarded to a researcher at the University of Minnesota and the first since 2015. Modiano’s grant will help facilitate the transition of sarcoma research from the lab to the clinic.

In it’s February issue, The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association highlighted equine researchers and practitioners who have recently garnered awards for their achievements. Out of the eight veterinary professionals, Sian Durward-Akhurst, BVMS, ’16 MS, a doctoral candidate in the Comparative and Molecular Biosciences graduate program, was featured for receiving the 2018 Equus Foundation Research Fellow grant of $5,000 for her research in equine genetics.
