To better understand the consequences of rising student debt, we asked Dr. Trevor Ames, dean of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, to explain the causes of rising tuition and discuss some of the solutions to keep student debt manageable and the DVM degree accessible.

Perhaps it was some of her early memories of life on her family’s fifth generation South Dakota farm that cemented Dr. Beth Thompson’s interest in large animal medicine. “It’s always been livestock for me, and particularly swine,” says the executive director of the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, state veterinarian, and 2007 alumna of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The University of Minnesota’s Leatherdale Equine Center recently hosted an event showcasing the center's research. The event for industry professionals and friends of the Equine Center included tours of the equine facility, Piper Equine Hospital, and a poster session featuring more than 30 research projects.

A new grant awarded to the College of Veterinary Medicine by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Insitute of Food and Agriculture will boost dairy production medicine and food safety education for rural veterinarians.

The Veterinary Medical Center’s small animal hospital has earned its accreditation for another three years from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Only 12 per cent of U.S. veterinary hospitals, clinics and practices are accredited.
