GOALE: Gopher Orientation and Leadership Experience

A group of first year DVM student gather in a group at orientation.

GOALE is a largely experiential course designed to introduce first year students to the veterinary college, the veterinary program and the veterinary profession.

The course begins with 2 days of orientation on campus, followed by a 2-day and one night off-site orientation program followed by 4-5 follow up hour-long informational meetings, and monthly 2-hour-long mentor group meetings through the entire first year of the DVM program. The off-site orientation program and the monthly meetings are experiential in design and focus on leadership development, emotional intelligence, communication and conflict management. The 1st orientation day and subsequent hour-long meetings introduce students to the college facilities and resources, and address logistics necessary for participation in the program. Students work in mentor groups of 9-11 students and 2-4 faculty mentors throughout the course.
