Dr. Bey's research focused on the bovine mastitis diagnostic center and the etiology of bovine mastitis. He developed an on-farm milk culture system to help reduce the inappropriate use of antibiotics on dairy farms. His research evaluated the role of bedding materials in environmental mastitis to determine which types of bedding material and particle size support the lowest bacterial growth and whether the bacteria retained were pathogenic. Dr. Bey determined the best methods of monitoring milk quality on the dairy farm. These efforts directly applied to the nationwide high-quality food and food safety initiative.
