Alex Bianco, DVM, MS, DACVIM

I am a native of Minneapolis and graduate of the UMN College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing a 1 year rotating equine internship at Kansas State University, I completed a 3 year residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at Purdue University. Following my residency, I remained at Purdue for an additional year working as an equine ambulatory veterinarian. I was fortunate enough to return to the University of Minnesota as clinical faculty in 2016.

My interest in research is targeted towards projects that have clinical application in large animal veterinary medicine. Specifically, I am interested in pain management, pharmacokinetics, and critical care medicine.

My primary teaching goal is to help facilitate the transition from the classroom to veterinary practice. I have been impressed with the advances made in the DVM curriculum since I was a veterinary student; I am excited to be a part of this revitalization of the curriculum. I encourage independence, problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking through case-based learning. I believe that practicing these skills early in the curriculum is integral to helping students become successful veterinarians.

Most of my teaching occurs in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital on the Large Animal Internal Medicine clinical rotation during the 4th year. I have other involvement in teaching in 1st-3rd years in areas of Large Animal Internal Medicine and fluid therapy. I also work extensively with our large animal house officers to assist in their advanced training programs.
